Mahon is the capital of Menorca, since the British
moved it from Ciutadella in 1721. The reason being a harbour of 5 km long,
over 1 km at it's widest point, and 15-30m deep makes it one of the largest
natural harbour in the world, this and it's location in the Mediterranean,
has made it a strategic stronghold for many nations throughout history.
The port is only a few steps from the city center. This circunstance,
has made Menorca Mahon a favorite destination af many cruises.
If you arrive to Menorca by sea you will enter in port Mahon, you can
distinguish the severe walls of the old Lazaretto theatre in other times
of so many tragedies, the fortress wall of Isabel's II (La Mola) and face
the cheerful fisherman town Es Castell that has the privilege of being
the most oriental population in the Spanish territory.
The Port of Mahon has always been the element that has defined Menorca
Mahon along the history, for what walking along the Port is almost a must
to visit for any tourist any time of the year.
Even though the Port has several accesses, one of the best is walking
down the hill that is beside the fishmarket, where we will be able to
enjoy the gardens of Rochina Park, in the old ravine integrated in the
city between two cliffs, the left cliff is the oldest nucleus, with the
City council and Santa Maria's church and, to the right Carmen's church
and the old convent.
