Mallorca Airport of Son Bonet was built initially
to cover mail necessities between the Peninsula and the island.
In 1921 was opened the line Barcelona-Palma for postal mail and
in 1934 it was enlarged for tourist flights. One year later opened
up the Palma-Madrid line. The increase of the aerial traffic caused
in 1958 the construction of the current airport of Son San Joan
leaving Son Bonet only for military use. The constant increase of
tourism in the island has caused several enlargements in the airport
until last one in 1997.
Some of the Mallorca airport facilities are:full service bank, 24-hour
bureau de change facilities and several ATMs. There are post boxes,
a post office and telephones, a snack bar and a self-service restaurant
in Arrivals in the Central Terminal, a snack bar on the second floor
in the Central Terminal, and a restaurant, a pizzeria, two self-service
restaurants, two cafés, a bar and a juice bar in Departures
on the fourth floor in the Central Terminal. There is a café
and a fast food outlet in Concourse A, a snack bar in Concourse
B, three snack bars in Concourse C and two snack bars in Concourse
D.
Mallorca Airport shops include duty-free, toy shop, leather goods
shop, shoe shops, a jewellers, opticians, florists,a tobacconists,
sweet shops, gift shops and a clothing accessories shop. Other facilities
are 24-hour first aid services and a pharmacy. There are numerous
travel agents located throughout Arrivals.
