During the Civil War, Ibiza airport was build
as a military airfield. Later, the airport was opened to national
and international tourist air traffic. However, the airfield had
not proper installations and was closed two years later. On 1966
Ibiza Airport was opened to international traffic and customs 24
hours a day and next year was reclassificated as a first class rating.
Ibiza Airport is locted only 7 km from the capital near almost of
all the major tourist resorts, Ibiza Airport is not only the island's
main communication link with the Spanish mainland, Europe and the
world, but also a key resource in the economic development of the
region. The airport facilities service both Ibiza and Formentera,
and are used by 95 per cent of the people leaving or entering these
islands. The accumulated growth in passengers over these years proves
that the island has become one of the preferred tourist destinations
for European travellers.
Ibiza Airport is located in the Ses Salines natural park of Ibiza
